AI Safety Framework

How we ensure Symbiota's AI coaching is safe, responsible, and evidence-based.

Core Safety Principles

Symbiota's AI Gut Coach is built on a foundation of medical safety. The system operates under strict guardrails: it never diagnoses conditions, never suggests stopping prescribed medication, and always recommends professional consultation for serious concerns.

Every AI response is generated within a safety framework that includes red flag detection, scope limitation, and confidence disclosure. The AI explicitly communicates what it can and cannot advise on.

Red Flag Detection

The AI automatically detects and escalates mentions of red flag symptoms including unexplained weight loss, blood in stool, difficulty swallowing, fever with abdominal pain, and new symptoms after age 50.

When red flags are detected, the AI immediately shifts to recommending urgent medical consultation rather than providing self-management guidance. This is a non-negotiable safety boundary.

Evidence Grounding

AI responses are grounded in peer-reviewed research on IBS, FODMAP, gut-brain axis, and digestive health. The system draws from a curated knowledge base of clinical guidelines and published studies.

When evidence is uncertain or conflicting, the AI communicates this uncertainty clearly rather than presenting speculative information as fact.

Acknowledged Limitations

The AI coach cannot examine users, run tests, or access complete medical histories. It provides educational support and self-management guidance, not clinical recommendations.

We continuously monitor AI outputs for accuracy and safety, and update our guardrails as new research and clinical guidelines emerge.
