Our FODMAP Approach

How Symbiota implements the FODMAP protocol based on Monash University research.

Scientific Foundation

Symbiota's FODMAP protocol is built on the research pioneered by Monash University, the world's leading institution in FODMAP science. The low-FODMAP diet has been shown in multiple systematic reviews to reduce IBS symptoms in 50-80% of patients.

Our food database contains FODMAP data for over 1,000 foods, with serving size thresholds derived from published Monash University data and peer-reviewed literature.

Three-Phase Implementation

Phase 1 (Elimination) guides users through 2-6 weeks of low-FODMAP eating with daily load tracking, safe food suggestions, and meal planning support. The duration adapts based on symptom response.

Phase 2 (Reintroduction) follows a systematic challenge protocol — each FODMAP group is tested over 3-day periods with precise serving sizes. Symptom responses are tracked and scored automatically.

Phase 3 (Personalization) builds the user's Food Passport based on reintroduction results, creating a personalized long-term dietary plan that maximizes variety while avoiding individual triggers.

FODMAP Stacking Detection

A unique feature of Symbiota's approach is our FODMAP stacking algorithm. Even foods rated as low-FODMAP can contribute to symptoms when the cumulative load across a meal or day exceeds individual thresholds.

Our system tracks total FODMAP load across all five groups (fructose, lactose, fructans, GOS, polyols) and alerts users when combinations approach their threshold — a pattern that simple food lists miss entirely.

Nutritional Safety

The FODMAP elimination phase can risk nutritional inadequacy if not properly managed. Symbiota monitors dietary variety and alerts users if their food choices are becoming too restrictive.

We consistently recommend that users undertake the FODMAP protocol with guidance from a FODMAP-trained registered dietitian, and our app is designed to complement — not replace — professional dietary advice.
